Susina Plantation Inn
Thomasyille, Georgia
IN THE SPRING, ALL ROADS LEAD TO Daytona and a week of motorcycles at speed. But no one says that riders must travel the same road to get to the most famous and popular beach in America. For those traveling the back roads on the way to Florida, the southern reaches of Georgia offer exceptional historic inns and lodges for out-of-the-ordinary accommodations.
Just north of the Florida/Georgia border, and a little south of Thomasville, the Susina Plantation Inn is
one of those special refuges. Listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, Susina Plantation was built in l 84 l, and has been converted into an eight-bedroom, bed-andbreakfast hotel located on l l 5 acres of lawns and woodlands.
Owned and operated by AnneMarie Walker, Susina is noted for its oak and magnolia trees shading its screened verandas. The plantation is so peaceful that people such as Paul Newman and former President Jimmy Carter use the inn as a quiet get-a-way. Meals are cooked by Walker and served by her in the large communal dining room. The basic room rate ($ l 50 for two) includes dinner and breakfast.
