UPS AND DOWNS
ROUNDUP
UP: To television sports network ESPN for its 1988 coverage of the 250 and 500cc World Roadracing GPs, and of the World Superbike Championship. One highlight was the Brazilian GP. where Cagiva-mounted Randy Mamola was shown throwing tremendous powerslides coming out of nearly every turn. Unfortunately, Mamola crashed spectacularly, but the ESPN cameras captured every slip, slide and tumble, and followed Mamola as he got up and walked away, humbled, but unhurt.
UP: To muscular actor—and HarleyDavidson owner—Arnold Schwarzenegger, included in Vanity Fair magazine’s yearly “Hall of Fame” issue. In a photo taken by renowned celebrity-photographer Annie Liebovitz, the star of Terminator; Commando and. more recently, Twiins is shown astride his own V-Twin, a Heritage Softail.
DOWN: To Earth First. Just in case there aren't enough hate groups in the world already, you can pencil this organization on the list, right next to the KKK and the Skinheads. Earth First is a terrorist organization formed, as they tell it, to save the environment “through action, rather than rhetoric.” For the past two years, the group has performed acts of sabotage on the Barstow-To-Vegas off-road race which easily could have resulted in the injury or death of riders entered in the race.
This year. Earth First called the Barstow Police Department just before the start of the race to take credit for covering parts of the course with metal spikes that were twisted and had four jagged points apiece, sort of like jacks from hell. The only casualties were a few flattened tires—four of which were on a ranger’s truck. But the group doesn’t get discouraged, and you can bet we haven't heard the last from it.
