Isaac Randall House
DESTINATIONS
Freeport, Maine
WHEN YOU'RE ON THE road and it’s time to stop for the night, there are two distinct approaches to the situation. 1) You can find the local No Surprises motel with free HBO, and spend the evening putting quarters in the Magic Fingers machine; or 2) you can plan ahead and stop at a place like the Isaac Randall House, and spend the evening basking in the glow of interesting people and good old-fashion conversation.
The Isaac Randall House, built in 1823, is located in Freeport,
Maine, just a stone's throw away from the L.L. Bean retail store. What makes Freeport interesting is that the town has almost as many factory outlets as it does people. It's a quaint, typical New England town, but because of its location, a few hours from Boston, it attracts many northbound vacationers for ascheduled shopping stop. And when you’re ready to stop shopping, there’s the Isaac Randall House.
As bed-and-breakfasttype inns go, this one couldn’t be considered especially big or ornate. But what makes it interesting are the hosts, Glynrose and Jim Friedlander, who are given to detailed explanations of local history and places of interest. And for breakfast, Jim will whip up a mean batch of blueberry pancakes to get you back on the road again. To make reservations, call or write the Isaac Randall House, Independence Drive, Freeport, ME 04032; (207) 865-9295.
