Dick Burleson won his eighth consecutive AMA Enduro Championship by finishing second overall in the season’s final event, the Wheeler National Enduro in Tulsa, Okla. Burleson said he will retire from national competition in 1982 and devote more time to doing research and development for Husqvarna.
Terry Cunningham, another Husqvarna pilot, won the Wheeler enduro overall and finished the year just two points behind Burleson in championship standings. Cunningham and Mike Melton, who finished third in the enduro championship on yet another Husqvarna, will head the 1982 Husqvarna enduro team with another, asyet-unnamed rider replacing Burleson.
The 134-mi. Wheeler course was devastated by unexpected, steady rain which reduced the trails to mud bogs and sent most riders back to their vans. Of 450 entries, only 70 finished.
