THE DUCK STRIKES BACK

Shortly after the Phantom Duck of The Desert was enjoined from organizing his annual Barstow-To-Vegas trail ride and the ride took place in groups small enough to fit the rules, on roads and trails open to public use, as noted last month, New West, a monthly magazine published in California, had an article about off-road vehicles.

They are, you knew without being told, against them. Not just motorcycles but jeeps and trucks and buggies as well.

The article was written by a man who has also been paid to write a book in the same vein, the funds coming from a federally-financed group.Ourtaxdollars at work, against us, as we also could have guessed.

The article was predictable, in that it depicted off-roaders as mindless vandals, burning trees, aimlessly shooting riñes hither and yon, never happy unless riding or driving across virgin terrain, flowered if possible. You can guess the contents, as we’ve all seen this type of article already.

We naturally wrote a letter to the editor, unpublished as yet and we're not gonna hold our breath.

We hope for something better. The article named the Phantom Duck of the Desert. He has a legal defense fund, and we're told that his lawyers believe he has cause for damages. He was the only actual individual named, they say. and that makes him a victim of a unfair attack. In what way? We can’t say as the lawyers will tell us only that it will all come out in court. The petition seeks $1 million in damages, which should get New West'?, attention. We’ll be watching this one.
