MAGURA THROT

Did you ever think about the many possible cures for any given problem? Thke the loop the throttle cable makes as it leaves the standard twist throttle. All bike riders are aware of the potential hazards if the cable snags a tree limb, another rider’s bars, or one of a million other things. Besides being dangerous, a long cable is required to make a large radius bend to avoid kinks. Nothing new, just a problem that most everyone has accepted.

About the only throttle that didn’t have a large cable loop was the stock BMW unit, made by Magura.

Gunner Linstrom got thinking about the problem and designed a throttle that eliminated the loop by routing the cable parallel to the bars like the BMW. Gunner took a conventional throttle and added a pulley on the top to change the angle the cable entered. The “Gasser” was an instant success and other people began to design different ways to do the same thing.

MTD is marketing an all plastic throttle that boasts a straight-line cable pull and a totally different cable-to-throttle connection. It also eliminates cable loop and works well.

Now Magura, known for their superb dogleg clutch and brake control levers and conventional throttles, has introduced their version of the straight-pull throttle. Mechanically it is completely different from the Gasser and MTD. Its housing is cast from magnesium, the cable adjuster is made from aluminum, the actual working parts are nylon. The unit is more compact than its predecessors and the cable runs closer to the bars’ center line. A magnesium inspection cover can be lifted by removing one screw. Once inside one finds a round nylon plate with provisions for a normal barrel end cable hookup. Well, normal for a Magura throttle. Magura shapes the attaching hole so the cable may be changed by unhooking the carburetor end, then unscrewing the adjuster on the throttle housing. The nylon plate turns via bevel gears, a smooth positive system. Two model are offered; ISDT and Motocross. The MX (model #32-158) has a quick 68° action when used with a 36mm carburetor. The ISDT (model #32-159) is a little slower, 85° with the same size carb. Price for either model is $25.95 and the cable goes for $6.95.
