HERE WE ARE IN THE POCONS

INSIDER'S GUIDE

The Pocono region of Pennsylvania encompasses 2400 square miles of mountains, lakes, streams, and woodlands. The brochures we obtained from the Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau, however, made us wonder just how much attention the tourists give to the great outdoors. Pocono is called a Haven for Honeymooners and the majority of hotels, motels, and cottages in the area offer heartshaped tubs and telephones, mirrors galore, oversized beds and red velvet curtains. Even outdoors it's difficult to escape the passion because you'll find "Kissing Bridges" and "Cupid's Playgrounds." Well, among all this splendor is the Pocono International Raceway where noisy motorcycles will gather in August for the Camel AMA National Cycle to interfere with all the goings-on in the private suites.

TICKET INFORMATION

Saturday's events include Novice and Lightweight Expert finals. Tickets for that day cost $3. A ticket for Sunday costs $10 and you'll see Expert 750 heats, Production finals, Novice finals and 750 National finals. A weekend ticket is available for $10 if purchased in advance either from the race track (Pocono International Raceway, Box 500, Mt. Pocono, Pa. 18344), or from your local Ticketron outlet. People under 12 years of age get in free.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Pocono area is located less than two hours away from either New York or Philadelphia. From New York take Hwy. 209 through Stroudsburg and then 1-80 West to Long Pond. From Philadelphia the race track is a straight shot north on Hwy. 115.

Greyhound, Martz Trailways and Pocono Mountain Trails have direct-line bus service to the Poconos, and there are several airports in the vicinity.
