THE VINTAGE YEARS AT BROOKLANDS
DOCTOR JOSEPH BAYLEY
THE VINTAGE YEARS AT BROOKLANDS, by Dr. Joseph Bayley, Published by Goose and Son, $16.95 (plus 5 percent California sales tax and 24 cents for mailing and handling) from CYCLE WORLD BOOKS, P.O. Box 20220, Long Beach, CA 90812
In the early 1920s, Brooklands was the only true race track in England. This was the proving ground of British engineering and machinery, which at that time was so fiercely competitive. “The Vintage Years At Brooklands” is a unique photographic history of the men and their motorcycles who earned fame and glory at that renowned raceway.
The book delights with photos from the author’s personal collection of Brooklands lore. Particularly memorable are the pictures of George Brough astride his 980-cc Brough SuperiorJ.A.P., C.W. Lacey’s 498-cc Grindlay Peerless, which averaged more than 105 mph for one hour in 1929, and C.P. Wood’s Scott, a 498-cc water-cooled two-stroke.
In all, the book features 70 riders and 40 different makes of motorcycles. Recorded are the great names of English prewar motorcycle racing in this, one of the most fascinating volumes compiled on the subject. [Q]
