TOP MEN IN EUROPE:
B. R. Nicholls
Arthur Lampkin
TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD Arthur Lampkin is one of the few riders who have reached the top of the tree in both reliability trials and moto-cross.
His latest success and probably the most rewarding is the Scottish Six Days trial which he won with a loss of only seven marks against the runner-up who lost twenty. Typical of the attitude that had got him to the top was his remark after the trial when he said it should have been won with the loss of one mark. Then with a devastating example of his versatility he flew from the Scottish trial to Denmark to finish fourth the next day in the Danish round of the 500cc moto cross championship. In 1960 he had been runner-up in the European championship to Dave Bickers.
Arthur started riding in trials as soon as he was allowed on the public roads and gained works support at the tender age of seventeen, and at eighteen gained the coveted Pinhard prize awarded annually to the rider under twenty-one who has made the most meritorious performance in the year. Mechanical ability as well has helped to gain two gold medals in the International Six Days trial. But the Scot tish seems to bring out the best in him for there are few his equal at riding on the rocks.
However, I think we still have the best of Arthur yet to come, and this is the moto-cross side of the sport. Yes, he is a natural and must surely win a 500cc moto cross title in the next two or three years. S
