BONNEVILLE
NATIONAL SPEED TRIALS
THE running of the Bonneville National Speed Trials this year saw records falling left and right, the most impressive of which was the long-sought World's record. Joe Dudek and Bill Johnson's well known Triumph streamliner was the star of the meet, but they were not alone in their record breaking. The American Motorcycle Association sanctioned event is run in conjunction with the automobile attempts and things get pretty fast for a few days.
All machines must make at least two runs through a series of clocks spaced at ¼ mile, I mile, 2 miles and 3 miles, after a 2 mile acceleration run. Highest average speed is computed from the two best speeds achieved in any one of the measured traps, ie; the Dudek/Johnson Triumph turned 208.695 in the first mile, 225.140 in the second, and 232.258 in the third, going one way. On the return trek it went 228.281 in the third mile, 207.134 in the second, and 159.221 in the first (but last) mile. Johnson's average speed, taken from his two trips through mile three, was 230.269 mph.
